Living in the Western world, where our healthcare/sick-care system is dominated by allopathic medicine, the unfamiliarity of Thai Massage is a common occurrence. I often get asked, "What is Thai Massage? And what is it good for?"

The roots of Thai Massage are said to go back thousands of years, where the proof and data of its effectiveness is in its stronghold of being a treatment modality that has surpassed the test of time. For some, it has even become a way of life or even spiritual practice.

The approach of Thai Massage in its very essence, is a holistic concept. I remember the first day of my Thai Massage training back in 2016, when my instructor came into the room. One of the first things she said to us was, "I want you all to forget everything you've been taught in your western training, because we are going to see the body totally different now." I'll never forget that moment. A new chance to see the human being as this beautifully complex being, having been created as an energetic being, wholly. A living being, being constructed of all levels of the human existence. Not a separate construct of body parts or body systems, or of a separation of physical or mental parts. But rather all woven together, connected to the great universe in all its complexity.

With all of that in mind, lets explore the benefits of Thai Massage!

  1. Increased Range of Motion

The therapist generally uses a combination of hands on techniques including compressions, pressure point massage, and passive stretching to support and nourish the joints, connective tissues and Qi (life force energy), thus allowing more freedom of range of motion to be available for the person.

  1. Supports Emotional Wellbeing

Thai Massage can create an environment that allows the client to feel supported as they unwind from the daily stresses of life. They are given the space to become in relationship on a deeper level with their physical, emotional and spiritual self. The Sen lines (energy lines of the body), are worked through during a session allowing for more free flow of Qi (energy) in the person.

  1. Supports healthy digestion

The benefits of creating more parasympathetic tone of the nervous system helps to create more of a state of rest and digest in the body. Parasympathetic tone engages our digestive receptors more efficiently , disperses digestive enzymes more readily, softens tissue tone of the digestive tract, and stimulates the the digestive tract to absorb nutrients and excrete wastes more effectively.

  1. Increases Energy Levels

When the body gets into a place of relaxation with Thai Massage, its common for people to experience an increase of energy post treatment. Often this arises when our body has a chance to clear any physical, emotional or energetic blockages. As we relax and our energy flows with more ease, we have more reserves created in our energy. We have more space created in ourself to have the stamina we may need. Thai massage is a great adaptogenic to life. If the body is needing deep rest, Thai Massage can support that, and if it needs more energy, Thai Massage can support that need as well. Our body is perfectly created, and when supported in an environment for healing, we naturally adjust to what our body may need to function optimally.

  2. Spiritual Connection

We are innately connected to the universe we exist in, we are part of it. We are not separate from the vastness of creation. Just as a blade of grass is here as part of an ecosystem, we too, are part of that system. That system being life itself. Here on Earth, and here within the unseen world. The unseen connection that is the same which breathes life into us and gives that grass the energy to grow, to exist. That pulse of life that flows within each of us. And Thai Massage helps us remember how our physical, emotional and spiritual self exists within this world. It helps us connect inwards deeper, to a deeper remembering. We become more attuned to noticing our physical, emotional and spiritual body and how they all coexist together.

The Thai Massage Treatment

Generally, your therapist will ask that you either arrive in, or bring a change of clothes to wear that are comfortable and easy to move in as the treatment is done fully clothed. You can expect the treatment to occur on a Thai Massage floor mat, or occasionally on a massage table with pillows or bolsters used. Some therapists may even incorporate herbal compresses or aromatherapy into your massage. Most treatments combine a variety of massage techniques along with passive stretching, energy line clearing and chakra clearing. At any given time, you can let your therapist know if the pressure, range of motion, or position you are in is uncomfortable. You are in charge of your body. Always make sure to let your therapist know ahead of time of any restrictions of range of motion, or if any devices are implanted that may interfere with range of motion. As your treatment comes to an end, you may experience feelings of relaxation, increased range of motion, uplifted emotions and sometimes more energy!
