What is an Essential Oil?

Essential oils are volatile components of a plant that are highly concentrated aromatic extracts. The material that is extracted via a distillation or expression process are typically from parts of the plant such as the flowers, flowering tops, fruits, leaves, roots, resins, seeds and woods. Plants have an innate intelligence, and the essential oils produced from them have a multitude of functions. Some of these functions, being to attract insects, repel competition of other plants, protect against predators, and to defend and protect. Think of that deliciously smelling summer rose bush aroma or your grandmas spring wildflower garden that hosts our friendly butterflies and bees that come to pollinate. Or how some plants may release their volatile oils to deter insects or animals from approaching them. These volatile oils can also be protective to the plant by fighting off many organisms that may be a threat to them, and act as an antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and antibacterial to support the plants survival.

How to Use Essential Oils?

Essential oils are volatile oils. This means they have the ability to evaporate being exposed to air after sometime. After either distillation or extraction from the plant, this liquid is generally stored in glass or non plastic containers to ensure their longevity and stored with a lid.

The uses include methods such as aromatically (inhalation and olfaction), topically, and internally. There is a lot to consider with these methods, such as quality and purity of the oil, safety of which plants are contraindicated for internal or topical use (aromatically too), or oils that may affect your skin if exposed topically with sunlight, for example. As you read the information throughout this blog, keep in mind that the information provided is not to diagnose, prescribe or treat, and that working alongside your healthcare practitioner with how you use your essential oils is always best practice. In fact, I would encourage you to learn all you can about them and approach your health care practitioner to work to integrate these wonderful essential oils into your wellness journey!

When we use essential oils aromatically, for example, through inhalation or olfaction, we can elicit effects on the self physiologically, emotionally and even mentally. One of the easiest ways to use them like this is simply smelling the essential oil right from the bottle with some relaxing breath cycles. This direct inhalation or olfaction method flows through our nose and the receptors on our cilia hairs, connecting the aroma to the olfactory bulb in the brain and our limbic system of the brain. Another common way is to use a diffuser, a device combining water and the essential oil, used to diffuse the aroma into your room. It's important to have a well ventilated area to use them in, and if pets or small children are in the home, make sure to understand safety of oils near animals and children. See below: Safety with Essential Oils. Topical and internal use are fantastic methods to use your oils, given the safety, purity and knowledge to do so is under qualified guidance, as no two oils are created the same. You can read more on their uses when you visit the "DoTerra" section of my website or by purchasing your oils below with the link.

History of Essential Oils

For longer than the ancient Egyptians have existed, then to the times of Christ where the gifts of Frankincense and Myrrh appeared, aromatherapy, aromatic remedies and then essential oils existed throughout thousands of years. Their many benefits for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health, aromatic perfumes, wound care, etc have served humans for many millennia. From use in the home, religious ceremonies and cultural traditions, funeral and body preservation, aphrodisiac enticement, etc, aromatherapy with essential oils is something that can enhance your wellbeing greatly!

"......there is virtually no people known to anthropology- however remote, isolated, or primitive- in which some form of doctoring with plants was not practiced."-Barbara Griggs, The Green Pharmacy.

In 1937, coining of the term "aromatherapie", happened. The man responsible for coining the term, had written a book called "Gattefosses Aromatherapy", from which several physiological ailments were written about and the clinical findings of such. The man is Rene-Maurice Gattefosse. Gattefosse went on to publish many studies for the uses of essential oils, and worked throughout hospitals and with others outside the hospital to gain his research on the medicinal actions of essential oils.

There is a long history of aromatherapy, essential oil usage and the research that continues to go into this practice. With regards to DoTerra essential oils specifically, they are a company engaging in constant research, oil testing, ethical growing, harvesting and processing practices throughout the world. One such means to test the quality and purity of their oils is through a system called, GC/MS, which stands for Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry. You can read more about this research in the link below. Becoming empowered in your health means to become informed, as we are each responsible for our self governance of our body. Read more about GC/MS here below.

With all this information in mind now, I encourage you to continue your journey into empowering your wellness and becoming informed on all the choices you have for your health. We are free beings, with the ability to search out what best serves us with regards to becoming informed. Make sure to utilize my website, along with my DoTerra link for continued information.
